Since South American indigenous cultures have the winter solstice as the conception of the beginning of a new cycle of life, Aymara, Quechua (Inca), Likan Antai, Rapa Nui and Mapuche cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year with spiritual ceremonies.

The Aymara celebrate June 21st with the denominated Solstice and the Quechua (Inca) with the denominated Inti Raymi.

The Inti Raymi takes place in Cuzco and is considered together with the Oruro Carnival as two of the most colorful celebrations in South America. It is a beautiful spectacle with more than 500 natives that bring alive their heritage. The ceremony begins at the main square of Cuzco and centers later in the saqsaywaman. Although the main festival takes place on June 24th, there are week-long events with street fairs, exhibits, dancing on the streets, activities in the Main Square and lively music.
